Endodontics (root canal treatment)Endodontics (Root canal treatment)

Root canal treatment (also known as endodontics) is needed when the blood supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or trauma. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour which could be an indication that the tooth has died or is dying.

When this occurs the pulp can become infected and an abscess may develop. The aim of root canal treatment is to clear up the infection by thoroughly cleaning out the canal and then to seal it so the tooth can be saved. Without a root filling, a tooth with a dead pulp if left would probably have to be taken out in the end and there is also a possibility of infection spreading beyond the tooth itself.

Root canal treatment is a skilled and time consuming procedure which may need to be carried out over two or more visits. In most cases the treatment is successful and can last many years. However, if the infection returns the treatment can be repeated.

In the past a root filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques this does not usually happen. If there is any discolouration there are several treatments available to restore the natural appearance.
